One of the first things people ask me at Rejuve Aesthetic & Wellness Center in Granger is, “If I get fillers, am I stuck with them forever?”
The answer: no, dermal filler isn’t permanent. And honestly, that’s a good thing.
Why Fillers Don’t Last Forever
Most of the dermal fillers we use are made from hyaluronic acid. That’s the same stuff your body naturally makes to keep skin plump and hydrated. Over time, your body breaks it down.
That’s why fillers fade. For some people it’s 6 months, for others 12–18 months, sometimes even 2 years. It depends on the filler type, where it’s placed, and your own metabolism.
Why Temporary Is Better
Here’s how I explain it to my clients: imagine wearing the same haircut for the next 15 years without a change. Doesn’t sound great, right? Same thing with your face.
Your features shift a little with age. What looks perfect now may not look balanced in five years. Fillers that fade give us the chance to adjust as you go.
What If You Don’t Like the Look?
This is where fillers are even better. If we use hyaluronic acid fillers and you decide you don’t like the look, I can dissolve them. There’s an enzyme called hyaluronidase that works within a day or two.
It doesn’t happen often, but it gives peace of mind. You’re not locked into anything.
Are There Permanent Options?
There are fillers that last longer—things like Sculptra or Bellafill. They stimulate collagen and can hang around for years. But they’re not truly permanent, and here’s the catch: they can’t be dissolved quickly if you change your mind.
That’s why I usually recommend starting with HA fillers first. You can always move to longer-lasting options later if you feel comfortable.
How Long Fillers Usually Last (From What I See)
This is what I’ve noticed after treating clients in our clinic:
- Lips: about 6–9 months. We move our mouths constantly, so the filler fades faster here.
- Cheeks: 12–18 months. The filler tends to hold better in this area.
- Under eyes: up to 18 months, sometimes longer. Movement is gentler here.
Lifestyle matters, too. If you’re a runner, have a fast metabolism, or spend a lot of time in the sun, fillers may fade quicker.
Do You Look “Worse” After They Fade?
No. When fillers wear off, your face just goes back to how it looked before. Some clients even notice their skin looks a bit better long-term because fillers can lightly stimulate collagen.
So don’t worry you won’t deflate like a balloon.
My Honest Take
I actually like that fillers aren’t forever. It gives flexibility. We can refresh and fine-tune as your face naturally changes. And if you ever want to stop, your body simply absorbs the filler and you’re back to your baseline.
Final Word
So, is dermal filler permanent? Nope. And that’s the beauty of it. Temporary means safe, adjustable, and natural-looking results.
