How Long Do Dermal Fillers Really Last? Honest Advice From Inside the Treatment Room

Let’s be honest if you’re thinking about getting dermal fillers, you’ve probably already spent a good hour down a Google rabbit hole. One minute you’re admiring someone’s gorgeous cheekbones on Instagram, the next you’re asking, “Wait… how long does filler even last?”

We get it. At Rejuve Aesthetic & Wellness Center, this is one of the first questions new clients ask and it’s a smart one. You deserve to know what kind of commitment you’re signing up for. So let’s sit down (figuratively) and have that conversation. Real talk, no fluff.

So… What Are Dermal Fillers, Exactly?

If you’re new to all this, fillers are injectable treatments that help replace lost volume in the face. As we get older, our faces naturally lose fat and collagen, which makes the skin look less full, less firm, and well… tired.

Fillers step in to smooth out lines, plump up lips, lift the cheeks, and bring a refreshed balance back to your face.

The most popular ones, like Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Versa™, are made with hyaluronic acid a naturally occurring substance your body already produces. That’s part of what makes them so safe and well-tolerated.

Alright, But How Long Do They Last?

The answer is: it depends. Not what you want to hear? Stay with me—I’ll explain why.

Different areas of the face metabolize filler at different speeds. The type of filler used also matters a lot. Here’s a general idea based on what we’ve seen in the clinic:

  • Lips: You’re looking at about 6 to 9 months. The lips are in constant motion (talking, eating, kissing), so filler tends to break down faster here.
  • Cheeks: This area holds filler well. Depending on the product, you might get 12 to 18 months, sometimes even longer.
  • Smile lines (those creases from your nose to mouth): Usually 9 to 15 months, depending on how deep they are and the filler used.
  • Under-eyes: This one’s tricky. The area is delicate, so we use softer fillers here. You can expect results to last about 9 to 12 months.

These are averages, not promises. Some people metabolize filler faster. Some slower. We’ve seen it all.

What Influences Filler Longevity?

You’d be surprised how many things come into play. Here’s what matters:

  • Your metabolism – If you’ve got a fast one (lucky you), your body might break the filler down a little quicker.
  • How expressive you are – Are you animated when you talk? Smile a lot? That’s beautiful, but it can cause filler in those areas to fade sooner.
  • Lifestyle habits – Smoking, lots of sun exposure, stress, and poor skincare can all shorten the lifespan of your results.
  • Product choice – Not all fillers are the same. Some are more dense or “cross-linked” to last longer.
  • Injector technique – Where and how the filler is placed matters. This is where experience counts.

At Rejuve, we don’t just inject and hope for the best. We choose the right product for the right area, every time. That’s how we help clients get more mileage out of their treatments.

Can I Make My Filler Last Longer?

Short answer: yes. There’s no magic, but good habits help.

Here’s what we recommend:

  • Hydrate like it’s your job. Water helps keep hyaluronic acid plump and happy.
  • Use quality skincare. Medical-grade products make a difference.
  • Wear SPF every day yes, even when it’s cloudy.
  • Avoid extreme heat after your appointment. That means saunas, hot yoga, and steaming-hot showers for a couple days.
  • Get touch-ups before your filler completely fades. It’s easier to maintain volume than to start from scratch every time.

What If I Change My Mind?

The nice thing about HA fillers is that they’re reversible. If for some reason you’re not loving your results (which we work hard to prevent), we can use an enzyme called hyaluronidase to dissolve the product safely.

That peace of mind makes a big difference especially for first-timers.

Will My Face Sag If I Stop Getting Fillers?

Nope. That’s a myth.

Once the filler fades, your face just returns to where it started. It won’t look “worse” or “deflated.” What you might notice is the return of fine lines or a little less volume but nothing scary or unnatural.

So, How Often Should I Come In?

It depends on your goals. Some clients come in once a year for cheek or jawline filler. Others pop in every 6–8 months to keep their lips looking fresh.

We’re big believers in a less-is-more approach. Start conservatively, see how your body responds, and go from there. You don’t need to overdo it to get beautiful, natural results.
